Tuition:  All Columbia and Barnard pay their home school tuition (which is not listed above) and are billed by their home school. It covers tuition, course excursions, most course materials and cultural activities.  It does not cover housing, meals, local transportation, airfare, medical insurance, some course materials, personal travel, and personal expenses.

Document (transcript) Fee: This one-time fee of $105 is charged to new students.   This fee will be included on your e-bill. Barnard students might be charged this fee if they haven’t taken a course at Columbia.

NON-BILLABLE expenses are not billed by Columbia.  The estimated figures in this section provide a basis for students to determine their individual budgets for expenses related to their time overseas for the duration of the program.  The above estimate is an average of what students say they actually spend. These expenses are NOT paid to the program.

Meals:  The cost for meals will vary widely depending on individual spending habits.  Costs can be kept down by preparing your own meals and only eating out occasionally.

Housing: All students are required to live in Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) self-catered, apartment-style housing. Costs will depend on students’ housing selections.

Local Transportation:  QMUL provides free shuttle bus service from London Heathrow Airport to campus on specified dates.  However, students will be responsible for paying for transportation to the airport in London at the end of the program. Students must also pay for local transportation around the city.

Visa: U.S. citizens need a visa to study in London.   Students apply and pay for their Short-Term Student Visa upon entry to the UK.  As of March 28, 2017, the visa costs £89.  If you are not a U.S. citizen, you should check the UK consulate website to determine if you need a visa.

Books and course supplies: These expenses can include books/photocopies, supplies for courses, additional course excursions, etc. Students can purchase textbooks and course supplies for the Columbia in London Global Seminar and their QMUL modules through the QMUL bookstore.

Cellphone: All students are required have a working cell phone capable of making and receiving both local and international calls throughout the duration of the program.

Airfare:  Estimated cost of a round trip airfare from NYC to London. Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements from their preferred departure city to the program.

Personal Expenses: Personal expenses are highly variable based on each person's spending habits.   They may include entertainment and personal travel.

It is required that you maintain a health insurance policy that will also provide coverage outside the U.S. for routine, urgent and emergent care.  This cost is not included in the chart above.
