Tuition and fees are subject to approval by The Trustees of Columbia University and may change.

BILLABLE fees will be billed by Columbia or as noted.

*Tuition: Columbia University (Barnard College, Columbia College, SEAS, School of General Studies), Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, Princeton University, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, University of Notre Dame and Vassar College: You will be billed at your home school’s regular tuition rate directly by your home school.

Visiting Students: If your school is not listed above, then you are considered a Visiting Student. You are responsible for paying the BCGS tuition and document (transcript) fees directly to Columbia University. The program invoice will be sent via e-bill mid-August and will be due mid-September. It covers tuition, course excursions, most course materials, some local transportation and cultural activities.  It does not cover housing, meals, airfare, medical insurance, some course materials, personal travel, and personal expenses.

Program Fee: The program fee covers orientation housing, guest stay housing during the first 4 weeks of the program (which includes daily breakfast and one dinner a week), and a full year of German Health Insurance.

Document (transcript) Fee: This one-time fee of $105 is charged to new students. This fee will be included on your e-bill. Barnard students might be charged this fee if they haven’t taken a course at Columbia.

NON-BILLABLE expenses are not billed by Columbia. The estimated figures in this section provide a basis for students to determine their individual budgets for expenses related to their time overseas for the duration of the program.  The above estimate is an average of what students say they actually spend. These expenses are NOT paid to the program.

Meals:  The cost for meals will vary widely depending on individual spending habits. Costs can be kept down by preparing their own meals and only eating out occasionally.

Housing: After the first 4 weeks, students are responsible for finding their own housing.  They can opt to live in dorms, but need to decide this prior to departure. Otherwise, students find apartments throughout Berlin for a range of prices. Dorms are the cheapest option.

Local Transportation: Students will be responsible for paying for transportation to and from the airport in Berlin at the start and end of the program. Students pay for their first month of local transportation and then it is covered by the program for the rest of the semester.

Visa: Students are responsible for visa fees.

Books and course supplies: You are responsible for purchasing any course materials at the local university.

Cellphone: All students are required have a working cell phone capable of making and receiving both local and international calls throughout the duration of the program.

Airfare:  Estimated cost of a round trip airfare from NYC to Berlin. Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements from their preferred departure city to the program.

Personal Expenses: Personal expenses are highly variable based on each person's spending habits. They may include entertainment and personal travel.

It is required that you maintain a health insurance policy that will also provide coverage outside the U.S. for routine, urgent and emergent care.  This cost is not included in the chart above.
